History

Reels was first launched in Brazil in November 2019 under the name "Cenas". It was later expanded to France and Germany before launching globally in August 2020. The launch came at a time when TikTok was facing potential bans in several countries, including the US and India.

Unlike the main Feed, which is based largely on who you follow, the Reels tab is designed to be a discovery engine. The algorithm prioritizes content that is "entertaining". Key signals include:

• User Activity: Which reels you liked, commented on, and engaged with recently.
• Interaction History: If you have interacted with the person who posted the reel.
• Information about the Reel: Audio, video understanding, and popularity signals.
• Information about the Author: Popularity and consistency.

Impact
